Soulwax CD coverSoulwax are a Belgian rock band consisting of David and Stephen Dewaele, Stefaan Van Leuven and Steve Slingeneye.

The Dewaele brothers mix as 2 many dj's and Hang all dj's, which is what I love them for. The band Soulwax is a very different thing than 2 many dj's or Hang all dj's. I recommend you leave this record on the store shelves.

The first trouble sign was the proclamation that this record was 3 years in the making, and that the production was by Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Nine Inch Nails). Records that take so long to make usually mean that the artists tastes change during the creation process, and that they spend a lot of time trying to reshape/remodel the results of expensive recoding time into something they can release with their new aesthetic.

The second trouble sign was the celebrity guest appearance by LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy on NY Excuse. The celebrity guest syndrome was used by Felix Da Housecat and Golden Boy used with Miss Kittin, and Trevor Jackson in Playgroup with Kyra from Thee Headcoatees, Kathleen Hanna from Le Tigre, and Edwyn Collins from Orange Juice. The song NY Excuse sounds contrived and is not anything inspired or original.

The third trouble sign comes when you listen to any song on this record.

Unless you like Queens of the Stoneage and metal grunge like Alice In Chains, you will probably be less than enamored with the Soulwax record. Add to this the ridiculously expensive price tag the disc came with here in the US and you have a record I do not recommend, even to stanch 2 many dj's fans.
