Gupsy Aujla CD coverGupsy Aujla is a 25 year old bhangra artist. AfterShock is his second album, following up the LP Out of Nowhere.

The music shares community with such artists as Bikram Singh and the Scottish duo Tigerstyle. Liner notes inform that this record contains influence from Brazilian Samba, orchestral sounds and traditional desi instruments mixed with contemporary western music. There is a lot of percussion on all the tracks.

Bhrangra music is usually performed by Pakistani Sikhs. The music combines traditional instrumentation with beats and electronics. Traditional instruments such as the Tabla, Dhol, Dholki and Harmonium are played by Gupsy on this record.

Most bhangra has male vocalists. This record has four songs sung by Jaswinder Daghamiya. The remaining songs have vocals by Bhagwant Pawar, Jaswinder Patti, Ravinder Malri, Arif Khan, Amar, Angrej Ali, Goga Takhar (each does one song). I can't comment on the lyrics, as they are not sung in English.

Aftershock is a good album. I never heard his first record so I can't compare the two, but I can compare this disc to the many fine releases on VIP Records, and the result is favorable. Aftershock has some really fine tracks. My favorite tracks are Dil Chaiyda, Reshmi Kameez and Joban. Your faves may vary.
