October 12 - 18, 1998
CD / The Audience / The Audience / Mercury /
London band who at times sound uncannily like The Pretenders. They've had several
CD singles at Newbury, but this CD has all three of the A sides, plus several
other very good songs.
CD / Various / Instrumentally Yours / Richmond/Cherry Red /
1993 Cherry Red compilation of instrumentals, with Maurice Deebank (Felt),
the Monochrome Set, Ben Watt (Everything but the girl), Eyeless in Gaza,
Loiuse Phillip (who has songs on the great "All Done with Mirrors" comp added
last week), and several others.
CD / Various / Seven Unlucky Sevens / Slampt /
This CD has 44 tracks, which covers the 1st seven singles on Slampt in their
entirety. The bands are Avacodo Baby, Pussycat Trash, Golden Starlet, The
Yummy Fur, Unseen, Milky Wimpshake, and Missy X.
LP / Various / Teenage Treats Volume 4 / Xerox /
We have Vol 2 of this series already. I've heard Vol 3, but it didn't stand
up to the strength of Vol 4. This LP, on coral pink vinyl, contains 12 songs
of punkish Mod music that sounds original and energetic, from UK's 77-81
period. There are several songs which are must-hear, with the best among
them the awesome "You're all I wanted and a car" by Voice Of The Puppets.
7" /Petty Crime / 5 songs / Slampt /
Pete Rojas, who used to be MD at WHRB's Record Hospital 3 years ago, plays
drums in this neat new band, which follows in the Pussycat Trash type of
sound, and features ex members of Skinned Teen..
7" / Polythene / Pet Hates EP / Guided Missile /
pretty intense noisy male/female vocal punk featuring the drummer of The Fall,
Carl Burns.
CD / Josef K / Endless Soul / Marina /
This band simply
rules. They have the heart of Orange Juice, but a much sharper guitar and
ramshackle sound. They forecasted the sound which became known as "C86" along
with Big Flame, early Wedding Present, and This Poison!. This long overdue compilation
is on the German label Marina, who issued Adventures in Stereo's records
in Germany.
CD / Donkey / Stroke My Wings Gently /Guided Missile /
New record by the Amsterdam band loosely connected to The Ex, but much more
regular, though I don't mean that in a bad way
CD / Various / Let's Go! Joe Meek's Girls /RPM / 29 songs performed by different early 60's UK Girl Groups all produced by Joe Meek
CD / Various / Smiling Pets / Sony Japan /
Word is that this amazing compilation is not going to get a European release,
so this high priced import is the only way to hear these Beach Boy songs
covered by very good bands like Adventures in Stereo, Melt Banana, Olivia
Tremor Control, Thurston Moore, John McEntire, David Grubbs, and a dozen
others. Even Melt Banana is reverent towards the Beach Boys, and no one is
boring or cliche.
2xCD / The VLF Recordings of Stephen P. McGreevy / Irdial
/
Very Low Frequency Receiver field recordings of audio frequency radio waves
generated by the Aurora Borealis (the Alaskan 'Northern Lights') and the interaction
of millions of bolts of lightning with the Earth's magnetic field.
12" / Kreidler / Coldness / Kiff /
"brand new 4 song 12"". Kreidler (I don't know if it exists anymore), was a German
motorcyle popular in the seventies and early eighties. They had small and cheap
motorcycles which were favourites of the 'proletarian' youth (as opposed to the
scooter driving mod- and new romantic types).
